What is Action Steel League?

You shoot steel plates. They make a lot of noise and give instant feedback/gratification (assuming you hit them). It's fun.

How it works:

A match usually consists of 5-6 stages.  Each stage typically has several shooting positions/boxes and/or defined shooting areas and an array of steel targets.  The stage description will detail the requirements, including which steel plates must be engaged from which shooting area.  Round steel get one round each; all non-round steel get two rounds each (unless otherwise stated). Occassionally we will also have falling steel which must fall to score (except for .22 divisions.) Misses and penalties add 5 seconds each.

How can I get involved in Action Steel League (ASL)?

Usually it's as easy as just showing up at a match with your eye/ear protection, handgun, extra magazines/speed loaders and holster (or encased gun for rimfire.) ASL is intended to be fun and safe for all levels of shooters.  However, while we welcome new action shooters please keep in mind that ASL is NOT the place where you should expect to receive basic pistol instruction.  You MUST already be sufficiently familiar and competent with your firearm to be able to observe basic gun safety, to load, unload, engage the safety, and decock (if aplicable) your firearm.  Also there is some movement so finger and muzzle awareness are very important.   Please contact the ASL Discipline Director if you have any questions about whether you are ready or not to try ASL.

What guns are allowed in Action Steel League (ASL)?

Any rimfire or centerfire pistol that is in safe operating condition.  The Match Director will make a decision on a case-by-case basis if there is any question about whether a gun is safe to shoot.  Centerfire pistols can be anything except very powerful pistols which could damage our steel targets or present a safety hazard.  This means no 44 Magnum, 5.7x28, or similar rounds.  Again, the Match Director must approve any non-standard rounds (anything other than 22LR, 38 Special, 9mm, 40SW, 45ACP, etc)

22LR Rimfire Rifles as well as Pistol Caliber Carbines may be used in Action Steel, under the condition that the unloaded rifle can ONLY be brought to the firing line in a closed case with chamber flags inserted.  Centerfire rifles (e.g., AR-15s in .223, etc.) are not allowed in Action Steel matches as they will damage the steel targets.
